Best New Restaurants, Meals & Cocktail Bars in Austin 2015

2015 seems to have flown by.  But if I take a moment to think back on everything that I have to be thankful for this year, I can only feel humbled, grateful, and a bit in awe.  Professionally, 2015 has been the most challenging one for me, as I completed my master’s program and obtained my license to practice in my other non-food related career.  I’m also embarking on starting my own practice, which holds many unknowns and promises.  Personally, I’ve made many new friends, and have concreted another layer onto existing relationships.  My family has continued to be my solid rock in the midst of often scary waves.  There is simply much to be thankful for.

Snapshots from Fukumoto Yakitori Izakaya in Austin Texas

When I heard that Austin was FINALLY getting a proper yakitori izakaya, I was thrilled.  I’ve spent countless hours drinking sake with friends in izakayas while living in Vancouver, and crawling through smoky yakitori bars and restaurants was one of my favorite things I did in Tokyo.  To my relief and delight, newcomer Fukumoto hit the right notes.

Snapshots from Bullfight, Spanish Tapas in Austin Texas

Last Friday, we made an impromptu trip to Shawn Cirkiel and the Parkside group’s latest venture: Bullfight.  I’ve long anticipated the opening of this Spanish tapas concept.  Since traveling in Barcelona years ago, I have yet to have tapas that brought me back to that fun, vibrant fare that stole my heart – until now.

Housemade Udon and Sake Flights at Daito Japanese Restaurant in Austin

I’ve dined exceptionally well this year in Austin so far.  I seem to say that a lot.  Vox Table and Counter 3.FIVE.VII are my favorite upscale restaurant openings in 2015 (posts coming soon).  But when it comes to the new restaurant that I’ve been visiting most consistently, it’s got to be Daito.

What and Where to Drink Right Now in Austin

Austin’s restaurant scene has erupted unabashedly in 2015.  I could hardly keep up with all the restaurant and bar openings this year thus far.  Not only are restaurateurs strutting their finest, bartenders, distillers, brewers, wine makers, and all colors of beverage crafters are also putting their best drinks forward.
