Melody Fury Spits: Women and Non-Whites Shafted in the Kitchen

Posted by on Jul 26, 2010

It’s no surprise that women still get paid less in the kitchen, as do racial minorities. After all, that’s where they belong so why pay them more?

Melody Fury Spits latest food news and gossip

“Women who responded to the survey—only about 10 percent of the total—made an average of $17,000 less than their male counterparts… And race inequality was evident, with Caucasian executive chefs earning about 30 percent more than African Americans.”

On a positive note if you’re considering the hefty culinary school tuition…

“The good news here is that foodservice is still one industry where you can make it by putting in time at the school of hard knocks.” [ Full Article ]

Societal progress is so encouraging, n’est ce que pas?

I’m sure certain female celebrity “chefs” aren’t helping women get taken more seriously in the kitchen either. Martha and Ina still rock in my books though!

Now spit back!

if only 10 percent (random at that) respond, how can you draw any kind of conclusion really.

Stats are merely stats. It’s no true science, you’re right. I “spit” to generate discussion so I love your feedback!

While I realize that are more than 10% of female cooks in a kitchen, would one say significantly so? I’m curious myself.

Wow, I’m pretty shocked these inequalities still exist in any NA workplace…

    What are you kidding me!

Isn’t just possible that those who respond to the survey may, just may have an adgenda to push and are not being truthful. Or feel they are not being paid fairly and want to complain, (when in the eyes of their employers they are being fairly compensated).

What about those who did not feel the urge to complete this survey due to their satisfaction with their renumeration and job?

Demographics please: the age, tenure, rest type, pay scale, hours worked per week, education and sex.

Welcome to Canada: The country that constantly apologizes and then compensates, cheques in the mail.

    Excuse spelling and grammer…no sleep.

speaking of paid less ~ restaurant kitchen employees (the staff doing all the prep, cooking, and cleaning) often work long hours for mediocre wages with no benefits. Where would the chefs and their restaurants be without them?

It’s sad, but I honestly don’t doubt the numbers. Women in the workforce generally are still only at around 75% of what men make.

In Canada only 22% of our members of Parliament are Women. If you go to a party and there are four dudes for every chick… it’s a sausage fest. Welcome to the House of Commons! This party sucks ;-p

I think it’s more prevalent across several industries — more than people want to admit. Even when I was working in corporate-land, you felt like there were less women making the decisions, and when they were given the chance to step up, fellas were chosen over the ladies. Granted, it could have been experience and other factors, but looking out at an executive board room of dudes, you couldn’t help but notice.

Ina is amazing. Lynn Crawford is pretty sweet too!

The gender and racial prejudices that are associated with women and women of colour cooking is definitely a multifaceted issue. Some of it derives from the marketing done for Martha and Ina — the way publicists and marketers sell celebs like them are appealing to the masses. I say let’s make someone who breaks these gender and racial molds a food celeb!

agree with rachael ray and sandra, but
giada knows her food. She recommended Angelini Osteria’s nonna lasagna for best thing she ever ate! it’s the best italian restaurant in LA. 28 zagat. the bomb.

she’s targeting the housewives who know nothing about food. and men who think she is cute.

I think the inequality of the situation is sad for everyone. As previously stated, statistics are statistics and not a true science – but it is common knowledge that in most fields women are not making what their male counterparts make. It makes me sad to think race or sex could hold back any skilled person from progressing in their job and making what they should.

Kita – precisely. But hey, more props to women that rise to the top, right? :D
