I’m unspeakably proud to be a Canadian and particularity, a Vancouverite today.

Kickin’ it with Bob Blumer, Canadian celebrity chef (Surreal Gourmet, Glutton for Punishment) [photo: KimHo]
This morning, the Olympic excitement really hit me when the torch passed by my window, followed by maddening cheering and music. As I follow the torch on TV and Twitter, I’m welling up with patriotic pride. Watching the flame being passed from one unique Canadian to the next, I’m reminded once more that cultural diversity is our nation’s remarkable treasure.
The Olympics not only brings us world-class athletes and sporting events, it also livens the city up with art, music, fun activities, and parties. I’m no athlete so I can’t contribute to my country in that way. However, as a critically (self) acclaimed food connoisseur and cocktail ninja, here’s my little contribution: a guide to my favourite eateries in town.

OH CANADA! Duck Poutine Lyonnaise (Duck Confit with Onion, Mushroom, Cheese Curd, Duck Jus, Egg)
Here is the series of TOP 10 Vancouver Eats that I compiled for Serious Eats. Enjoy, and be sure to give me a shout when you visit my beautiful city!

OTHER NEWS!

Tomorrow, I’m going out to sea on a B.C. spot prawn boat with local fishermen and chefs for the Today show. I get seasick easily so please send me some Gravol and best wishes. I’ll report back later :)
Lastly, I’m saddened by the news that Georgian luger, Nodar Kumaritashvili (21) died this morning on the track during practice in Whistler. This is a tragic start to the opening day but let’s hope that this devastating warning will prevent any further accidents. My heart goes out to his family and country.

I love your city! I’ve been there a couple of times (yep, to take a cruise to Alaska) and fell in love with it on the first trip. It sparkles. The mountains and water and gleaming city skyline are wondrous. It’s a perfect setting for the Olympics.
The next time I have the opportunity to head up there I will hit you up for current dining recommendations.

Your posts on Serious Eats have been a great tribute to the diversity of cultures and food in Vancouver (and have managed to make me intensely homesick at the same time). How I wish I was there to enjoy the spirit.

One of these days I’m going to have to make it up there to try all of these delicious foods!

Ha! I love Glutton for Punishment, and I used to watch Surreal Gourmet, too! Love this list, as it’s a great reminder of the diversity and flavor of Vancouver. So happy the Olympic spirit is in such a fantastic city that absolutely deserves the world’s attention for these next few weeks.

Just saw your post over at ZenChef, and as if I wasn’t hungry enough, I had to come over here and see that duck poutine. I wonder if I got on a plane now, if I could make it there by dinner…

Do you know of any Olympic-packaged type foods that I can take home to my family as an edible souvenir?
February 16th, 2010 at 6:24 pm
@Need a Souvenir : Chocolates from Purdy’s, cute Quatchi maple syrup, Jackson Triggs wine, Vancouver edition of Absolut Vodka.
Hope that helps!

Yet more reasons why I fantasize about retiring to Vancouver some day! ;)
Ahh, the food….just amazingly good there. And the people? So friendly and cheerful. What’s not to like?
