Bistrot Paul Bert in Paris

Posted by on Oct 30, 2009

Greetings from Paris. I assured you I’d update. Did you believe me?

I’m not going to say much about the city itself because judging from the number of responses and photo views from my Twitter followers (@GourmetFury), people are only interested in what I eat.

I don’t take offense ;) So sit back and allow my photos from Bistrot Paul Bert make you sweat.

Bistrot Paul Bert was recommended to me by Chef Anthony of Farmstead Wines. Tucked within in a small sidestreet, this unassuming gem was by no means easy to find, at least for travellers. I later discovered this is a renowned local favourite for evident reason.

I took a seat at a table outside and before long, the waitress approached me with a plywood board listing the specials. I deciphered the menu and ordered in my broken French… How did I do?

Assiette de jambon de cochone Iberique
Massive portion of paper-thin slices of Iberique ham, arguably the best ham in the world.

Terrine de foies de volaitte maison
A rustic chopped chicken liver terrine with Chanterelle mushrooms and beet salad.

Lievre à la royale et sa pureé de celeri
The most decadent of all: foie gras stuffed hare in blood sauce.

Pureé de celeri
Velvety celery root pureé to compliment the hare’s richness.

Côte de cochon rôtie aux chataignes et pommes grenailles
A succulent slab of pork the size of my face, served with amazing roasted baby potatoes and chestnuts.

Soufflé au Grand Marnier
A flawless creamy cloud of pronounced orange and liqueur flavour.

Figues rôtie au miel, glace vanille maison
Simple is best. Mindblowingly delectable roasted French figs in honey with housemade ice cream.

Bistrot Paul Bert completely nailed what I envisioned to be the ultimate traditional French meal. The food was over the top indulgent in an unpretentious, straight forward fashion.

No gimmicks, no frills, just heart-clenchingly luxurious comfort cuisine. Enough said.

Yum. I absolutely love fois gras so that all looks amazing to me. I’m just incredibly envious. The one and only time I was in France I was too young to appreciate good food.

I would definately argue that Iberian ham is the best in the world! It’s really hard to find in Canada (It was actually illegal in the States until a few years ago) – enjoy it as long as you can!
