With camera in hand and donned in my most farm appropriate outfit (red and white polka-dot shirt with a cherry-print skirt), I trotted down a dirt path towards the UBC farm with glee. Bright tents pitched against the brisk, blue sky welcomed me.
Beneath the canopy, colourful dots of local chefs, farmers, vintner, brewers, and food artisans bustled about.
This is my kind of carnival.

Feast of Fields is an annual fundraiser that connects eaters directly with those behind the scenes. This event showcases and supports BC’s local culinary scene by tickling our common love of gourmet food and wine.
This relaxed, inspiring, and delicious Sunday afternoon attracted food lovers and industry folks alike to nibble, sip, and mingle.

As I traveled from tent to tent, friendly faces offered their rainbow of products with pride; features ranged from dainty hors d’oeuvres to spelt-flour desserts, artisanal cheeses to sustainable seafood, game meats to ethical coffee. All local, all made with love.
Oh, and the wine. Plenty and plenty of wine.
I approached this feast with the notion that it will satiate my desire to see sustainable and ethical food practices manifested. Feast of Fields certainly surpassed my expectations.
Experiencing the participants’ and attendants’ enthusiasm reminded me once more that our local food scene will continue to thrive. The passion and dedication behind every pair of hands prompted me to never grow weary of supporting the local food movement.
Then again, eating (and drinking) locally is not a baffling idea to fall in love with when presented with such blessed bounty.
